Strongbox Theater in East Rockaway is finally opening its doors after a six-year renovation journey. This ambitious project, led by husband and wife team Tony Leone and Marla D'Urso, has transformed an abandoned bank into a vibrant performing arts space. The theater, with its unique design elements, including a preserved bank vault, is set to become a cultural hub for the community.
Leone and D'Urso's vision was to create a space that encourages face-to-face interaction and a break from digital isolation. The theater can accommodate around 90 people and will host a variety of events, from plays and comedy shows to concerts and open mic nights. The bar, featuring cocktails and small plates, will serve as a social hub before and after performances.
The renovation process, however, was not without its challenges. Initially estimated to cost a 'seven-figure sum', the actual expenditure ended up being double that amount. The couple had to endure a change of architects three years into the project, which threatened to derail their efforts. Leone and D'Urso's determination and perseverance are a testament to their passion for the arts and their commitment to bringing their dream to fruition.
Looking ahead, Strongbox Theater aims to become a launchpad for aspiring Broadway actors and a platform for local musicians. Leone's desire to revive Long Island's once-thriving original music scene adds a layer of excitement to the theater's future.
